Joe Montana's Art and Magic of Quarterbacking
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (November, 1997)
Authors: Joe Montana, Richard Weiner, and John Madden
Average review score:

learning from the best...
this book is awsome. Joe Montana, probably one of the greatest QBs ever shares his tips and secrets with the readers. Montana discusses everything from certain exercises to do, how to gain more accuracy, what's kinds of defenses there are, how you should grip the football, the different passing patters, and how he used to prepare during the week for an up and coming game. he goes through his mental preparation and what he's thinking in the first quarter, the second quarter, the adjustments at the half, the third, and then the 4th quarter.
Montana also preaches unity and team. he never places himself above his teamates and always credits the people around him for his success. his offensive line, his running backs, coaches, wide recievers, and his parents.

good book for any kid interested in becoming a QB or for anyone who just needs a little inspiration.

Montana is the maestro
Joe Montana gives fans of all ages the complete package of quarterbacking. He breaks down every little detail associated with the position. This should be the right hand textbook for anyone wanting to play QB. A beautiful photo gallery is depicted in each chapter.

Joe knows of what he writes!
I'm admittedly certifiably crazy about football, the San Fransisco 49ers and Joe Montana. But even discounting those facts, this is one of THE best books ever written on football. Joe really KNOWS football and he and his co-writer really allow you to get INTO his head from a position underneath the center and indeed, from positions all over the field. The diagrams and Joe's explanations of all the intricacies of the game are more than worth the cost of the book, even for veteran watchers of the game. Joe is not only knowledgeable, but gracious and humorous! Having been lucky enough to talk with Joe more than once I can guarantee the truth of those three adjectives to describe him. This book was SO good I sent a copy to my friends in Germany who are also 49er fans (one really LIKES diagrams and one really LIKES Jerry Rice!) I sincerely hope Joe writes MORE books in future. The Montana Cowboy: Legends of the Big Sky Country
Published in Hardcover by Stoecklein Pub (August, 1998)
Authors: David R. Stoecklein, Patrick Dawson, Dave Powell, and David Powell
Average review score:

Outstanding, insightful photos
Stoecklein's use of shading and shadow in his photography in this book really capture the Montana spirit. My wife, a born and bread Montana gal, really loved this book. She was really moved by some of the pictures. This is really a great book for the die-hard Montana resident (and you know who you are...) and anyone who likes the spirit of the northwest.

GOOD BOOK!!!!
I thought that this book really captures the aura of Montana. I believe that only the truth is seen when looking at these pictures. Coming from a ranch here in Montana, I only see a lifestyle and a way of living and I think that many people that don't have the same oppurtunities to see what I see everyday, can see it in the pictures of this book.

Excellent
The photographs make this book. I have never visited a ranch, but I now feel like I have. "The Montana Cowboy" shows the real working life of the American cowboy, not the fluffy romantic stuff that comes out of Hollywood. This book offered me the chance to experience the realities of ranching first-hand. It holds a prominent place on my bookshelf, and it is well worth the buy.

Montana Gothic
Published in Paperback by Vivisphere Publishing, Inc. (01 May, 2000)
Author: Dirck Van Sickle
Average review score:

Overlooked Masterpiece
This twisted tale starts in the early 20th Century and its style is so appropriate that the ending comes as a real blow although expected and inevitable. The tale goes on from there, through the decades and inevitable is the keynote. This book should be taught in colleges as it is the perfect use of prose to wring our minds with truly profound horror. Not ghosts or goblins, but the real horror of mortality and fate. And yet we want to read it again, or talk about it -- like Poe, like Faulkner, it brings us into areas we hadn't considered, but which are surely there for all of us. I'll never forget this book, but it may not be for everyone. I read that the author died last year; what a tombstone to leave behind! Truly an overlooked masterpiece in our literature.

Incredible -- What a Punch!
The 4 parts of this story are like 4 bullets hitting you in each corner, but something about them makes for a 5th bullet that gets you in the middle. How does it work? Friends I've turned on to it can't say, but they agree it is psycologically perfect in terms of doing it to you! If you love Horror/Weird, see how this one does it subtley in "subtext" as well as overtly. Why didn't it win some kind of prize? Maybe there's a bias against such truly dark writing -- but not here! I looked for other works by this author and found only a prescient and out of print ECOLOGICAL CIIZEN (non-fiction) but nothing since M.Gothic. One can see why! It's all in this one strange novel.

Literary Horror Masterpiece
We think horror is the supernatural, as with so many cheap stories. But in all of us, our true horror starts in our mind, and Van Sickle knows this in this very horrifying book. In a way, it is healing, insofar as the mental terror here is a way out of our own. I assume the cowboy and western elements are such that men would enjoy, but the inner terror that permeates this substantial work is what I feed upon. A first class job of fusing the West with the Nightmare. Unlike the other reviewer, I don't want to meet the author--especially on one of my dark nights. But I have reread this book three times and it makes me stronger each time. The best, and strangest, book I own. Olivia Lemon RN, NYC

Montana Match (Avalon Career Romance)
Published in Hardcover by Avalon (October, 2001)
Author: Fran Shaff
Average review score:

Montana Match
If you ever want to take a few moments to visit Montana, especially at night under a beautiful sky, then pick up the book Montana Match. You will simply fall in love with Jake Ruskin and Becky Montoya. From the moment she lands in his arms after arriving at his ranch, you know there is going to be something going on between the two. The book was enjoyable, and many times I wanted to reach inside and shake some sense into Becky. The character of Jake was great! We need more men like him. Sam, the housekeeper was a great addition to the book, not to mention Catherine and Lucas. I really enjoyed this book by Fran Shaff. I look forward to more of her books to read. Montana Match deserves five stars! A love story drawing two people together that were indeed meant for each other. I bought the book to add to my collection of Avalon romances. There are some stories that you read and just forget, this one you will read and always remember. I really enjoyed this story and you will too!!

Wonderful love story
A wonderful book to curl up and read, sigh at the end and wish for another peek into Becky and Jake's future. Lovable characters all the way around. A book a teenage girl would love; a ninty year old grandmother would adore; or anyone in between could get right into the middle of. Good job, Fran Shaff. Looking forward to your next book.

Stand back Dolly Levi, here comes Becky Montoya!
Mrs. Fran Shaff, originally from South Dakota, published her first novel in October of last year. She now resides in Hutchens, MN and is a full-time writer splitting her writing time between Romance novels and children's novels for middle readers. Montana Match was the third book to be featured in the new romance book club at Chapter a Day, the on-line book club. .... She states, "The feedback from club members was very positive." This is Fran's third Romance novel, and finally the one that paid off, and I am here to tell you why.

Her intriguing characters, Jake Ruskin and Becky Montoya are not your typical pair. Jake is a one-time-Wall-Street-Whiz who found his way back home to Montana and a ranch he grew up on. However, he was reluctant to leave all of the financial fiascos of New York behind. Through today's technological advantages he discovered he didn't have to. He lives and works on the ranch, but stays plugged into Wall Street via the Internet and continues his investment portfolio progress without skipping a beat.

Realizing that he lacks the valuable commodity we all know as time, and deciding he definitely does not want to grow old alone, and that an heir for all he has established would be a wonderful perk, he hires the services of Miss Becky Montoya. The founder and owner of "A Match Made in Heaven" matchmaking service she takes Mr. Ruskin's case into her own delicate hands and flies west to Montana to discover his lifestyle, characteristics, and what he is looking for in a wife.

Sound a bit familiar? I immediately thought of the excellent musical starring Barbara Streisand and Walter Matheau, "Hello Dolly!" However, unlike our clever Dolly Levi, Miss Becky is the one avoiding matrimony and refuses to interfere whereas Mr. Jake Ruskin is all too eager to get on with the next phase of his well-planned life.

They realize they are setting each other on fire each time they bump into each other, but Becky refuses to allow these animalistic feelings to encroach upon her well-laid-plans of her own life. Seeing first hand how devastating marriage can be, she vowed to not get married herself and to help those who are determined to marry, to marry the right person, a person they really could spend an eternity with.

Jake tries once, twice, but gives up after a third attempt to convince Becky she is his Miss Right. He accepts the lovely lady Becky and her database have found for him and goes about making wedding plans.

I won't give away the ending, but we all know the best laid plans tend to go amuck without much help from anyone, and perhaps this is especially so with the help of one old codgity cowboy turned house keeper for Jake Ruskin who sees how right Becky and Jake are for each other.

Just when you think all will go according to plan, and so obviously the wrong plan, well, the plans change and the book takes a wonderful twist in bringing about the conclusion.
This book is a wonderful short read. The style is simple and the words are not minced. It says it like it is, or stammers over it until someone figures out what it is and sets things to rights in this Career Romance from Avalon. It validates the point that we could all use a little help from our friends from time to time. And my new friend, Fran Shaff, has helped me turn a blah day into a fun one with her book, Montana Match!

An Unfortunate Prairie Occurrence
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (January, 1998)
Author: Jamie Harrison
Average review score:

A Fantastically Entertaining Read
I live in England and have no idea how I first came across this book apart from the fact I bought it from Amazon! But am I so glad that I took the plunge and ordered it. I have not enjoyed a mystery novel as much as this one in a very long time. The plot twists and turns with as many potential murderers as stars in the sky. Combine this with a wonderfully laconic sheriff, Jules Clement, great scenery, a large dose of romantic tension plus a lot of wit, sarcasm and humour, and you have one of the best crime novels you will have read in a while. I could not recommend it enough and am going to spread the word about Jamie Harrison to all my friends.

The Best Book of the Year? I think so.
This is outstanding writing, not merely an outstanding mystery, and is, in my opinion, the best novel of the year. The plot - and that word does not convey the depth of this story - would be marvelous by itself, but Harrison adds almost a dozen characters that stick in your mind and then melds them into a literary event. The writing's top-quality and there's not a hint of a wrong turn in this masterful performance. We all know her Dad's the better writer... uh, don't we? Don't we?

Well-drawn characters, literate and sympathetic
The characters are all believable, the writing is literate and witty, and the growing sense of evil makes this book well worth reading. Ms. Harrison gives a clear sense of place (Southwestern Montana) that never detracts from the book's pace or plot. She handles the large cast of characters and their complicated relationships so deftly that I almost never had to remember who was related to whom. A real pleasure.

The Baynes Clan: Montana Horseman
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (September, 2002)
Author: John S. McCord
Average review score:

Just Couldn't Put It Down!!!
I can not say enough about the Baynes Clan series of books. I bought this book to see if I would like the story. When I finished with it, I ordered the other five without hesitation. McCord is equal in every way to Louis L'Lamour in his writing abilities. I just wonder why anyone has not made a movie of the Baynes Clan yet. It is the best family western series since the Sacketts and I do not exagerate at all. After reading the Baynes Clan and Walking Hawk, another excellent book by McCord, I am a devoted fan of his writing style. I am eagerly awaiting his next western book!!! ~Bev. Bozman~

One of the best books I have ever read.
Mr. McCord is an author that needs no one to talk about him, his work does the talking for him. It is by far the best written and most captivating book about the West I have ever read. All of his books on the Baynes Clan are excellent. " James M. Mann "

For people who read Louis L'Amour
Ever sence Louis L'Amour passed away I have felt lost because no one could write like him. Well I thought so until I read The Baynes Clan by John S. McCord. He writes so much like Mr. L'Amore, I can dream and be there when I read his books as I did with Mr. L'Amour's books. I would suggest anyone who likes Mr. L'Amour's westerns should try Mr. McCord's westerns

Justin's Rock: And Other Poetic Reflections on Growing Up in Jordan, Montana
Published in Paperback by Writer's Showcase Press (August, 2000)
Author: Lawrence Richard Leuschen
Average review score:

Family traditions
I really enjoyed this book because the author ( my uncle) made me feel like I was in Jordan during his childhood. My father was very happy whenever talking about or visiting Jordan. This book helps me understand how he felt.

Justin's Rock
I recommend this book of poems to everyone, especially the folks that grew up in the rural ares of this country. I guarentee that any one who has spent time in a small town in the thirties and forties in rural America will find many things in these poems that will bring back fond memories. These poems are so descriptive, I am sure the writer must have lived them.

Wonderful collection!
Mr. Leuschen's poetry seems to capture the essence of growing up in Montana, which is certainly different than growing up anywhere else in our great country. Certainly a top rate collection from an (apparently) new poet. Highly recommended for poetry fans, or people (like me) that have always been a little in awe of the whole "Montana experience."

Montana Legacy (Superromance, 895)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (March, 1900)
Author: Roxanne Rustand
Average review score:

Talented storyteller

The Minneapolis gang avenged police officer Kate Rawlins' testimony against a member by killing a teen friend and wounding the cop. Kate, feeling guilty about Rico's death, promises a scholarship will be started in honor of the dead teen. Kate just inherited half of her estranged grandfather's ranch. She hopes this will pay the bill for the scholarship, but she must live there for six months to gain her half.

Seth Hayward inherits half the ranch too. He loathes Kate for ignoring her grandfather, who wanted to see her before he died. Kate remembers being tossed off the ranch as a child along with her mother and her grandfather who ignored them ever since. Seth warns Kate to stay away from his daughter. As Kate learns the truth about her heritage, Seth learns the truth about Kate. They begin to fall in love, but she is big city and he is big country.

MONTANA LEGACY is an entertaining modern ranch romance. The story line contains a bit of intrigue, but clearly centers on the emotions of the lead characters and several supporting players. Anyone who enjoys a warm category romance will gain immense pleasure from award winning Roxanne Rustand's warm tale.

Montana Legacy--Yes!
This is a touching love story about a good-hearted, but lonely man and a woman he means to hate, but finds he loves. Around them swirls a mystery which had thirty-something years in which to brew. When it finally reaches its treacherous end, the new found trust between the hero and heroine saves the day and a little girl's heart. A keeper.

A touching story of mending broken hearts--and finding love!
Kate, a disillusioned big city cop finds she has been left a ranch by her estranged grandfather. Reeling from the shock, she learns she must live on the ranch for six months to inherit. That means dealing with hunky Seth who runs the ranch and stands to inherit a portion of it himself. Sparks fly the instant these two meet--of animosity at first, but also of a hidden attractionn they can't deny. The author paints a vivid picture of the Montana ranch as Seth initiates the reluctant city girl to country life with humor and growing respect. There's a building sense these two from opposite worlds are ultimately meant for each other. But mysteries from the past threaten to tear them apart. You'll root for Kate and Seth as they struggle to put past hurts aside, deal with present dangers that threaten their very lives, and build a legacy of love together. Another delightful read from Roxanne Rustand! Make room on your keeper shelf!

When Wallflowers Die: A Phoebe Siegel Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (June, 1996)
Author: Sandra West Prowell
Average review score:

I was pleasently suprised at what a good story this is!
The synopsis of this book does not do it justice. I will admit that I was a bit hesitant about buying this book based on the synopsis, but I am so glad I have now disovered Sandra West Prowell and Phoebe Siegel! They have brought me many enojoyable hours and my only regrete is that I did not find Ms. Prowell sooner!

Not only is this a good mystery, but Ms. Prowell adds enough detail of the people, surroundings, and action to make the story come alive.

Tense, Present-Day Mystery Keeps You Wanting More
This is one of the best books that I've read in a year. It raises the bar for mystery writers. Although you will have to read about four or five chapters before the suspense takes off, the writing is good enough to pull you through the beginning. The characters are three-dimensional, description is rich, and the plot takes you decades into an established, fleshed out past. "When Wallflowers Die" is not to be missed.

She knows her turf
Sandra West Prowell's Montana mysteries are rooted in Montana's unique culture. With wit and verve, she writes these very readable mysteries that have endeared Prowell and her engaging sleuth, Phoebe Siegel, to many people nationwide.

She makes a valuable contribution to the mystery scene, using unique Montana settings.
